Reflexology is a popular and relaxing treatment based on the principle that reflex points on the soles, top and sides of the feet correspond to areas throughout the body . In this way, the feet can be seen as a map of the body. Reflexologists work on the reflex points using their thumbs, fingers and knuckles applying gentle pressure and specialised massage techniques thought to correct imbalances throughout the body.
The Chinese are said to have used an early form of reflexology more than 5000 years ago in their use of pressure therapies (acupressure). Egyptian tomb artwork also shows foot massage indicating that working on the feet is an ancient practice used in many cultures. Modern reflexology was developed by Eunice D Graham in the 1930’s and is now a popular complementary therapy.
BENEFITS OF REFLEXOLOGY
Creates relaxation - Reflexology induces relaxation in the body. Research has shown (24 studies) using EEG brain activity measurements, the relaxation effect begins, from the moment the reflexologist begins the treatment.
Reduces pain - Pain reduction following reflexology work is documented in 27 studies including research showing impact on individuals of all ages and health states
Improves health concerns - research shows that reflexology work helps individuals of all ages with some 78 health concerns including teething, colic, aggressive behaviour in children, arthritis, back pain, digestive issues, chronic illness, hormonal imbalance, sleep disorders and urinary conditions.
Improves blood flow - Separate studies show that reflexology work increases blood flow to the feet, brain, kidneys and intestines.
Aids post-operative recovery - Reflexology work aids recovery after surgery as shown by several studies, reducing pain and lessening the use of post operative analgesics.
Positive Impact on physiological measures (e. g. blood pressure and cholesterol; measurements by ECG, EEG, and MRI)
Benefits mental health - Research demonstrates that reflexology can reduce depression (eleven studies) and anxiety (nine studies)
