The Alexander Technique has helped
millions of people all over the world to
improve their posture, release muscle tension
and relieve persistent neck, back and joint pain.
It is particularly effective in preventing and alleviating
stress and anxiety and for breathing and vocal problems.
It is also widely used by musicians, actors and athletes to improve
performance and enable easier movement. In addition, many people use
the technique because they want to improve conditions that stop them
enjoying a happy, healthy life.
The technique works by helping you relax, rediscover your balance and increase
awareness of your posture.
What happens in a lesson
The Alexander teacher gives gentle hands-on guidance and verbal explanation to help you find a greater ease and balance in everyday movements and activities, such as sitting, standing, walking or bending. For part of every lesson you also work lying down, in a way that gives maximum support and relief for your back.
Through experience and observation you gradually gain in awareness, which helps you change long-standing habits and function more efficiently. In time you can learn to apply your new awareness and skill in everything you do.
